This all girl band made it big in the music scene in the mid 90′s era paving way to what is now branded as Girl Power. They are an English pop girl group formed in 1994 and is composed of Emma Lee Bunton (21 January 1976, Barnet England), Viktoria Adams Beckham (17 April, 1975, Goff’s Oak), Melanie Janine Brown (29 may 1975, Leeds, Yorkshire, England), Melanie Chisholm (12 January 1974, Liverpool, Merseyside, England), and Geri Halliwell (18 August 1972, Watford, Hertfordshire, England). These five fabulous and talented ladies met at several auditions which were unsuccessful and sometime in 1993 ended up sharing a house in Maidenhead, Berkshire.
Sharing a house and living under the same roof proved to be the starting point of these girls becoming the best-selling girl pop group of all time, getting more success in Smash Hits reading markets than Boyzone and Peter Andre. The girls started creating their own materials, writing their own songs and performing demos on various auditions until they were spotted and discovered by Simon Fuller who took them in May 2005 and became their long time mentor and manager. The music produced by these girls is a mixture of the dance-pop highly popularized by Take That, a feminist stance that is every bit as Madonna, that post-riot girl alternative rock feminism and showcasing England’s new lad culture making every teenager wanna be a spice girl.
They started hitting the top of the charts with their debut single, “Wannabe” in 1996 signed with Virgin Records. Their first song became a number 1 song in over 31 countries worldwide, making it a global success crediting them on pioneering and paving way for teen pop in the 90’s. The first album was a huge success selling over 23 million copies worldwide pronouncing it the best selling album by a female group in music history. Following the success of their first single, “Say You’ll Be There” entered the charts and made it to the top selling 200,000 copies in a week. Having acquired much success in the UK, the girls concentrated their efforts in the US in early 1997 releasing “Wanna Be” in January and “Spice” in February.
The British tabloids branded the girls with their own identities, Mel B as Scary Spice, Emma Bunton as Baby Spice, Geri Halliwell as Ginger Spice, Viktoria Adams as Posh Spice and Mel C as Sporty Spice. The girl group represented and paved way for iconic symbolism such as girl power and alongside their nicknames came out the movie, “Spice World”. In May 1998, Geri Halliwell left the group for various unknown reasons, despite her absence the girls thrived on and released their third album but separated and in the late 2000 to work on their individual careers. Geri released her solo album, Schrizophonic, Mel C took over the UK charts with her solo project, Northern Star and Emma Bunton had her share of success in the charts with her first album, A Girl Like me and in 2004 released, Free Me.
After years of rumors of the girls getting back together, the Spice Girls announced in June 28 2007 that they would be reuniting for an eleven concert tour, their Reunion Tour in December, together with the release of their Greatest Hits album.
