Joanne Kathleen Rowling is a British author of children’s fictional stories. From childhood she had been fascinated by writing and when she was just 6 years old her first story rolled out. After graduating from the University of Exeter she tried her hand at various jobs. When she was twenty six years old she was an English teacher at Portugal. She got married here and had a daughter. This is the time she started writing the Harry Potter story. Harry potter the fictional character was created by J.K.Rowling. She has woven a magical story around this boy Harry potter who was a wizard and had supernatural powers.
In 1995 she got divorced and again moved to England. She began looking for publishing jobs. When she had some time to spare she wrote and completed the story. All this time, she had little money to spare and could hardly pay for her daughter’s child care. Many publishers rejected her story and after intense hunt she managed to get her first book on Harry Potter and the philosopher’s stone in 1997.
The book was an instant hit with the children and adults alike. Millions and millions of copies were sold. This was followed by the Harry Potter and the Chamber of Commerce in 1998 which also sold like hot cakes. J.K.Rowling was catapulted to fame and she came to be known as the queen of magic.
By the year 1999 she had written two more books in the Harry Potter series and her works were available in thirty languages all over the world. Also a movie was released which was based on Harry Potter and the sorcerers stone which was a box office hit.
J.K.Rowling became a best selling author and all her problems relating to her finance vanished. Money and fame came pouring in and now she is the wealthiest woman in Britain. Her fortunes turned and she got married again.
J.K.Rowling’s books are a craze among youngsters and that is why ten million copies are sold out in the U.S. but it is not that the author has not come under criticism at all. Some conservative people in the U.S.have raised the objection that her books are far removed from reality. They argue that the books take children to a land of fantasy and these children would look for miracles in their own life rather than have a realistic view. Some parents have grown very angry about the book that glorifies magic and superstitions. They have asked permission from the schools where Harry potter books are included in the school curriculum to allow their children out of the class room whenever such a book is read or discussed.
It is an undeniable fact that J.K.Rowling has made her mark as a successful writer. Except the simple message that good triumphs over evil her books and movies convey hardly any thing more. But, then she is an entertaining writer and shall remain atop selling author for many more years to come.
